Integration Bee

The Math Club integration bee will be on Thursday, May 21 from 11:30-2:00pm in the Calc Lab in the basement.

The integration bee is a fun event where you compete to solve integrals faster than other students. There are several levels, so don't worry if you aren't an expert. It's a lot of fun. Oh, and there will be pizza!!

Math Awareness Month Talk

The Math Awareness Month Talk will be on Wednsday, April 29th at 2pm in AP&M 6402.
Paul Linden, MAE Chair and Interim Director of the Environment & Sustainability Initiative (and an Applied Math PhD) will give the talk. There will be cake.

Title: Mathematical models of green buildings

Abstract
The built environment is responsible for about 30% of greenhouse gas emissions in the US. The design of green buildings that use significantly less energy, especially for cooling, requires mathematical models that can assist architects and designers to create new designs. I will discuss one aspect - the use of natural ventilation in buildings which are cooled by using the thermal energy they acquire either through solar heating or from gains within the building from people and equipment. This kind of analysis was used to optimize the design of the new San Diego Children's Museum, among others.

This will be a Q&A about applying to grad school - what they look for in an applicant, what you should look for in a program, how funding works, etc. Start thinking about this early since applications will be due before you know it.

Calling Future Officers

For those of you non-seniors who will be around and are looking for things to do for next year - start thinking about being an Officer in the Math Club. It is an excellent thing to have on your resume for grad school or a job and it is a lot of fun! The positions are President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer/Webmaster. If you or someone you know would be good for one of these positions, you can find more information on the Math Club website or find one of the officers at the next meeting. We will send out more information about elections later in the quarter.

Integration Bee Wrap-Up

Thank you all for making this year's Integration Bee a resounding success! We'd like to congratulate the winners. In the undergraduate competition Carol (Ka Lai) Yuen placed first, with Vitaly Katsnelson coming in second. Last year's Math Club president, Will Garner, and Matthew Sudano from the Physics Department tied for the Graduate competition. We'd also like to thank everyone who participated. Spring Quarter Events

Our annual Integration Bee will be held on May 10th at 12:30 p.m. It will be composed of two rounds. The first round is open to undergraduates only. The second round is open to both undergrads and graduate students. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each round.

Back by popular demand is our Graduate Seminar. If you're thinking about pursuing post-graduate education in mathematics, then don't miss this event. Hear advice from graduate students who were once in your shoes. Find out what you need to do in order to make it into a grad program.

Finally, as the academic year comes to a close we will be honoring all the math students who are graduating with a celebration to be held at the end of the quarter. Students who are or have graduated this year will be invited, so check your inboxes for notifications within the next few weeks.
